There are many reasons why a person may experience excessive sweating - ranging from very simple explanations to those that are a little more complex.

Let's start simple!

1. It is hot

Put simply, some days are hot.

When the core body temperature rises, sweat is secreted from the skin to regulate that temperature and bring it back to a normal level. Sweat on the surface of your skin makes you feel cooler. When the sweat evaporates from your skin it does most of the magic of removing the heat. It's also important to note that on humid days, sweat evaporates slower. Hot weather or packed rooms with no air conditioning can contribute to your core body temperature rising, which leads to even more sweat.

2. Exercise

If you're exercising properly, you should be sweating! Some people sweat more than others and that is perfectly normal. Everybody's body is different. When we exercise, we experience an increase in core body temperature just like when it's hot outside. Increased muscle activity and heart rate are the reasons for a higher body temperature in this situation. Remember to stay hydrated!

3. Hyperhidrosis

Now for more potentially complex reasons on why you sweat excessively:

Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) is common and can lead to plenty of different uncomfortable situations. Hyperhidrosis is said to affect around around 5% of the entire worlds population. This condition can become active for many reasons. Some of those are heat, stressful situations, emotions, a combination of these or for no apparent reason at all. If you sweat excessively when you aren't in a hot environment or exercising, it may be a sign of hyperhidrosis.

4. Social Anxiety

Social anxiety can be defined as a feeling of nervousness in the anticipation or presence of certain social situations. There is a a whole host of symptoms for those who suffer from social anxiety such as an increase in heart rate, blushing, shyness, unfriendliness, excessive sweating and many more. For this blog, we'll focus on excessive sweating while future blogs will discuss some of the other symptoms.

Excessive sweating is seen in approximately a third of individuals who suffer from social anxiety disorder. What's more is if a person anticipates being sweaty in a social situation and worries others might be able to see, they may sweat even more. Being self-conscious, performing, going on a date and negative past experiences are only some situations which could cause social anxiety. Some individuals experience social anxiety in any social situation even if it holds no significant threat.

Two pieces of good news:

- Individuals can learn how to manage their social anxiety.

- Individuals can become more confident.

Improvement of social anxiety can come from life experience, meditation, therapy and many other different avenues. As cliché as it may sound, these situations are common and you are not alone!
